The Native Garden
Landscape Award in the Marlborough Environment Awards 2008/09.
"From the moment one drives through the entry to Hunter’s winery indigenous Wairau Plains dryland vegetation is evident.
The two hectare gardens are an outstanding and distinctive setting for the winery.
Interpretation panels and fact sheets describe the garden’s history and layout and the species used. Enticing walking tracks provide close-up encounters with the native vegetation.
Plants have been eco-sourced so are representative of the local gene pool. A feature is the purpose built, rare and threatened South Marlborough endemic species garden. Both native and exotic birds benefit from the sheltered habitat.
Intelligent placement of species to match the property’s various micro-climates ensures healthy plants and great presentation following the ‘Right Plant – Right Place” principle.
Winery wastewater is used for supplementary irrigation for the gardens. Exotic trees provide excellent shelter, shade and screening along with a mix of habitats.
Scattered sculptures and art works complement the varied texture, colour and form of vegetation. Buildings and other structures are in harmony with the gardens. Historic features have been retained and celebrated."
Our Cellar Door is located in the original farmhouse on our Rapaura Road Winery site. We rennovated the Cellar Door in late 2017 but have still retained the farmhouse, villa characteristics. We offer wine tastings inside as well as in our picturesque gardens.
We encourage visitors to wander through our native garden, to visit our resident artist in his studio or to linger in the Cellar Door garden with a glass or bottle of wine, paired with local and international artisan meats and cheeses.
We look forward to seeing you!

Resident Artist Gallery & Studio
Artist Clarry Neame spent over 20 years as an artist in residence at Hunter's winery, and in the last few years has decided to start working from home.
In 1970, Clarry married Helen, a wonderful, vivacious redhead and his staunchest advocate. Helen also happens to have worked at the Hunter's Cellar Door for more than 25 years.
His old studio is still hanging his original artwork and is available for viewing when the Cellar Door is open, and although Clarry isn't there, his paintings are on show for all to see.
Clarry is an impressionist oil painter, using both the brush and palette knife. Whatever the subject be it land, water, sky, people, gardens or flowers, Clarry loves to create.
Clarry pursues a form of pointillism in his approach to convey a feeling of excitement and visual stimulation. Colour, light, composition and texture are used to create with freedom and passion in a semi-abstract way.
