21 Sauvignon Blanc
Hunter's 40th Vintage
We are excited to share with you our 40th Vintage of Sauvignon Blanc! Our first vintage was bottled in 1982 and whilst the style has evolved steadily over time, we have endeavoured to stay true to our original quality focus.
Our classically styled Sauvignon Blanc shows passionfruit and lime characters along with grapefruit notes. Dry and saline, the lively palate has a creamy texture and a juicy finish.
We are proud that this wine is Certified Vegan by the NZ Vegetarian Society.

At the start of the growing season, we had several frost events affecting isolated areas in Marlborough. During flowering there was a cold spell of weather, which had a significant effect on the region’s fruit set. While this affects the yield, it can help promote concentration of aromas and flavors in the grapes. Mild summer conditions help with even ripening of the grapes which allowed perfect conditions to pick at optimum ripeness.
VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT - Mark Henderson, Otago Daily Times, January 2022
Passionfruit, smoke, citrus, and green herbs all vying for your attention. Racy acidity leads the way, a little prickle on the palate too, the grassiness and herbs supported by the underlying sweet fruit. The flavours grow nicely as the wines takes on some air. Zesty, refreshing style that really gets the salivating juices going.
BRONZE - San Francisco Wine Challenge, November 2021
4.5 STARS - Michael Cooper, Listener, November 2021
Hunter's fame rests on this wine, estate grown in the Wairau Valley, and this is a top vintage. It was mostly handled in tanks, but 5% of the blend was fermented in large French Oak casks. Pale and ripely scented, it is full-bodied and sweet-fruited, with impressive intensity of tropical fruit flavours, a touch of complexity, balanced acidity and a long, dry finish.
92 POINTS – Bob Campbell, The Real Review, October 2021
This label commemorates Hunter’s 40th vintage. Crisp and delicately pungent sauvignon blanc with grapefruit, lime, pineapple and passionfruit flavours. A classic Marlborough style making it a fitting choice to celebrate an important birthday.
SILVER – Aotearoa Regional Wine Competition, October 2021
4 STARS – Michael Cooper Wines, October 2021
Hunter’s fame rests on this wine. The goal is a strong expression of Marlborough fruit – a bell-clear wine with a mix of tropical and searing gooseberry characters. The grapes are sourced from numerous sites in the Wairua Valley, all company owned, and to retain their fresh, vibrant characters they are processed quickly, with some use of indigenous yeasts and lees-aging. The wine is usually at its best between one and two years old. The classy 2021 vintage was mostly handled in tanks, but 5% of the blend was fermented in large French oak casks. Pale and ripely scented, it is full-bodied and sweet-fruited, with impressive intensity of tropical flavours, a touch of complexity, balanced acidity and a long, dry (3 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. A top year.
Silver - Concours Mondial Bruxelles, September 2021
94 Points - Cameron Douglas MS, World of Wine, September 2021
Fresh, fruity, herbaceous, pungent, tropical and an abundance of energy and power. Classic with purity and charm. Fantastic on the palate with acidity that’s salty and salivates, a core of fruit with citrus, white stone fruits and tropical fruit flavours and acidity that pushes the texture and core flavours through the palate seamlessly. Well-made and ready to drink from day of purchase through 2025.
4.5 Stars - Winestate Magazine, September 2021
Sharply priced, this full-bodied, sweet-fruited wine was grown in the Wairau Valley and a small portion of the blend was fermented in large French oak barrels. Ripely scented, it is weighty, with strong, tropical fruit flavours, a distinct touch of complexity, balanced acidity and good length.
