18 Offshoot Chardonnay
This new Offshoot range allows the younger generation of Hunter's to experiment with new techniques and presentation.
A brilliant golden colour, the 2018 Offshoot Chardonnay shows a layered nose of nectarine and apricots, with a hint of nuttiness and pencil shaving oak notes. Stonefruit continues through to the palate where the soft elegant mouthfeel integrates beautifully with the French oak. The wine can be enjoyed now but will also develop and evolve over the next 5 years.
Old vine Mendoza Chardonnay was selected from our Rapaura vineyard. Handpicked fruit was gently pressed, 100% free-run juice immediately filled to large oak casks for a high solid, indigenous fermentation. Following fermentation, 100% went through natural malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in barrel on lees for 12 months and a further 6 months in tank before being racked and blended. The oak regime consisted of 100% French oak, 30% of which were new.

5 STARS - Yvonne Lorkin, WineFriend, March 2021
I thought the previous vintage of this wine was pretty hard to beat, but I tell you now, this 2018 is an absolute knee-quaker, brain-shaker and rib rattler of a wine. For a wine that proudly declares its ‘offshootness’ it’s made with precision and extraordinary care. Cloudy juice was fermented in large, 900 litre oak vessels before being matured for a further 12 months in oak barrels and then given another 6 months to knit together in a stainless-steel tank before bottling. That’s resulted in roasted nectarine and ripe peach notes colliding with grapefruit and lemon layers and a lusciously long, ever-so-slightly creamy finish.
GOLD – Royal Easter Wine Show, February 2021
BRONZE – The Real Review, Bob Campbell, February 2021
Offshoot is a label for wines made using experimental techniques in vineyard and winery. This is from Mendoza clone vines. It’s a textural and tangy chardonnay with grapefruit, lime juice, brioche and nutty oak flavours supported by crisp and slightly green acidity.
93 POINTS – Raymond Chan Wine Reviews, Candice Chow, February 2021,
Bright, yellow-gold colour, slightly lighter edged. The nose is gently full and complex; nuances of nuts, butter, struck match are well-proportioned, underlying stone fruit. Medium-full bodied, vibrant aromas of peaches, nectarines along with citrus interweave hazelnut, pencil shavings and whipped butter. The flavours are voluminous and well-proportioned, taut acid persists on the palate, providing freshness and carry flavours to a lengthy finish. This is a voluminous Chardonnay with complex flavours and a taut acid tension. Match with roasted pork and fowl over the next 5 years.
4.5 Stars - Winestate Magazine, December 2020
Still very youthful, this vibrant, medium-bodied wine was hand-harvested from mature vines at Rapaura, and fermented and matured in large (900 litres) French oak casks (30% new). Bright, light lemon/green, it has intense stonefruit flavours, seasoned with biscuity oak, very good vigour and complexity, and a persistent finish. Best drinking 2022+.
93 Points - Wine Orbit, Sam Kim, November 2020
“Complex and beautifully lifted, the bouquet shows apricot, mango, roasted hazelnut and flinty characters. It's succulent and richly textured on the palate, displaying excellent persistency and complexity with a hint of savoury nuance.”
93 points - Cameron Douglas MW, The Shout, August 2020
"Complex and wild, floral and textured, enticing and different. Flavours of white peach and lemon, wild flowers and leesy spices. There’s a flinty wet rock flavour, plenty of acidity then fruit flavours of peach and citrus, a touch of creamy custard and lengthy vibrant finish. Different and interesting, fun and new. Drink now and through 2023."
