Hunter’s Offshoot Pinot Noir 2020

4 STARS – WineState, November/December Edition 2021

This youthful, savoury red was hand harvested from 30-year-old vines in the Home Block at Rapaura, matured for 15 months in French oak casks, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bright ruby, it is mouthfilling and supple, with good depth of ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours, earthy notes adding complexity, and a smooth finish. Best drinking 2023+

Hand picked from estate grown, 30-year-old vines at Rapaura, in the Wairau Valley, the 2020 vintage was matured in French oak casks (40% new) and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Full, bright ruby, it is mouthfilling, savoury and supple, with moderately concentrated, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours, slightly earthy notes, and a good complexity. Best drinking 2023+.

Aromas of wild red flowers forest fruits and berries then classic scent of cherry and dark red apple skin with a suggestion of peach. There’s a fine savoury mineral suggestion that repeats on the palate. Youthful, firm and dry with flavours that mirror the bouquet, ripe, fine tannins and plenty of acidity. Lovely long finish, a little bit wild and a whole lot of charm. Best drinking from today and through 2027+.

 

 

 Hunter’s Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Passionfruit, smoke, citrus, and green herbs all vying for your attention. Racy acidity leads the way, a little prickle on the palate too, the grassiness and herbs supported by the underlying sweet fruit. The flavours grow nicely as the wines takes on some air. Zesty, refreshing style that really gets the salivating juices going. 

4.5 STARS – Listener, Michael Cooper, November 2021

Hunter’s fame rests on this wine, estate grown in the Wairau Valley, and this is a top vintage. It was mostly handled in tanks, but 5% of the blend was fermented in large French Oak casks. Pale and ripely scented, it is full-bodied and sweet-fruited, with impressive intensity of tropical fruit flavours, a touch of complexity, balanced acidity, and a long, dry finish.

Offering very good value, the bright pink 2021 vintage is a blend of Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer, grown in the Wairau Valley. Full of drink-young charm, it is a bright pink, floral wine, vibrantly fruity, with fresh, strong peach, strawberry and spice flavours, a touch of tannin and a dry finish.
